The Chicago Illinois Temple will be closed until further notice due to water damage from a burst pipe located over the women's instruction room. The pipe, which froze and broke during the final weekend of December 2008, left one room extensively damaged and put four inches of water on the floor—ruining the carpet in the building.
The Chicago Illinois Temple is the first of the operating temples built in the Midwest and the second latter-day temple built in Illinois, following the Nauvoo Temple (1846).
The Chicago Illinois Temple is a sister building to the Boise Idaho Temple and the Dallas Texas Temple.
The Chicago Illinois Temple closed in September 1988 for remodeling that more than doubled its size. The office area was expanded, a sealing room and cafeteria added, and the baptistry relocated and enlarged.
